Livestock Rules
- All sheep will be judged 60% on wool, 40% on conformation. The length of wool should be appropriate to show off the quality of the fleece for each particular breed. It is recommended that fine wool sheep have 1-½ inches of wool, medium wool sheep 2 inches and long wool sheep 3 inches. Belly shearing is not allowed.
- ALL sheep entered must be registered with their appropriate association. Proper registration is required for show participation. You may fill in “pending” under registration number on entry form. However, registration certificates will be inspected upon check-in. Proper ear tags are required.
- White Angora goats will be judged according to the American Angora Goat Breeder’s Association standards. Colored Angora goats will be judged according to CAGBA Standards.
- Each lot needs to have 5 or more exhibitors and a minimum
20 animals entered to qualify for a separate lot. Any lot without the required numbers will be combined with another lot at the discretion of the Sheep Show Coordinator. Exhibitors with the required numbers may request a separate lot but must do so by April 1, 2011.
- Individual animals may be shown in ONLY one lot. An exhibitor may enter only two sheep or goats per class. An exhibitor is de-fined as a farm or an individual. Two people using the same farm name are still one exhibitor. Each class must have at least two exhibitors and three animals or it may be deleted.
-
All animals must be sound and healthy and free of external para-sites. Sheep entries must be under two years of age except for does and bucks entered in the aged doe and buck class. The Black Sheep Gathering committee reserves the right to require the removal of any animal judged unhealthy by the committee.
*All sheep and goats coming from out of state
are required to have health certificates. *
- No commercial sales other than animals are allowed in the barn. Please limit farm name signs to a practical size, and any decora-tions to the subject of your animals. See rule 12 for Farm Display Pens. No wool or mohair fleeces may be sold on the grounds except through the Wool & Mohair Show and Sale.
- Every effort will be made to give exhibitors the number of pens requested but an exhibitor may get fewer pens than requested due to limited space. If space allows there will be communal tack pens made available to be shared by exhibitors. Aisles must be kept clear, and feed and equipment stored in trailers or assigned areas.
- Exhibitors must provide their own water buckets and feed. Check entry form for straw purchases.
- Pen cards will be available in the show ring in the barn and must be posted for each animal. Please identify animals for sale in some easily recognizable way.
- ANIMALS ENTERED FOR SALE OR EXHIBIT ONLY CANNOT EXCEED 25% OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ANIMAL ENTRIES FROM ONE FARM.
- Farm Display Pen (FDP): If you wish to put up a table or elaborate display you need to order a FDP ahead of time. Displays may not intrude into the aisle. The cost is $25. It is the size of one animal pen. The FDP pen may contain up to 2 sheep or 3 goats, tables, chairs, large signs or items, examples of farm products etc., however NO SALES of farm products other than animals are allowed in the barn. FDPs are assigned on a first come first serve basis AFTER all animal spaces are secured. Check the box on the entry form and you will be notified at 2-3 weeks prior to the show. Please send a separate check for the Farm Display Pen.

Angora Goat Division
JUDGE: Sara Bewley ~ Stephenville, Texas
The 2011 Black Sheep Gathering Angora Goat Show welcomes Sara Bewley as judge. Active in livestock since an adolescent, Sara first became interested in Angora Goats for their “cute”
factor. The challenge of making measurable genetic improvement
soon had her hooked for life. In the years since, Sara has judged
both in the United States and New Zealand and, along with her
husband Vernon, has captured multiple national championships
with their Angoras. The pair also runs a marketing agency from
their ranch in Stephenville, Texas, Hill Shepherd Marketing Group,
which specializes in the agriculture and equine industries.
Sara will also judge the mohair fleece show at the Wheeler
Pavillion at 4pm on Friday. This is an open judging so all are
welcome to watch judging. See you there!

- All fleeces must be claimed by producer or designee between 3:30pm and 5pm on Sunday, June 26, 2011.
Wool & Mohair Show Rules
- All show fleeces will be judged on the basis of handspinning quality and character, stressing cleanliness, strength and uniformity.
- A fleece for show and sale must be properly rolled and placed in a clear plastic bag to be presented for show. No tied fleeces. Mohair fleeces do not have to be rolled. No fleeces with mothballs will be allowed in the show. Please air your fleeces extensively, as some people are extremely sensitive to these chemicals. The show chair reserves the right to eliminate these fleeces from the sale and show.
The BSG Wool Show is a handspinners show. Handspinning char-acteristics of the fleece are the primary judging criteria. Judges reserve the right to unroll, with care, fleeces entered in the competition. Fine wool fleeces may be rolled with paper liners to prevent sticking.
- Each entry must be tagged with a Black Sheep Gathering tag available at the check-in table. Clear plastic bags will be available for sale.
- Sellers will receive a signed original receipt.
- Participants will receive a check via mail for their fleece sales (less 10% handling fee), within 30 days of the BSG. Participants are required to pick up unsold fleeces and must sign a release sheet at check out time on Sunday. If all fleeces have been sold this may be done earlier as record keeping allows.
- Wool show judging is limited by time and space on a first come, first served basis. Please send entry form in as early as possible.
- Number of entries: Producers may enter up to 20 fleeces in the WOOL SHOW. There is no limit on the number of fleeces in Class 00 (For Sale Only – not competing in the show).
Entries Per Class: Producers may enter 4 (four) fleeces per class.
- Wool and Mohair will be accepted for table sale (Class 00). Class 00: the rule is “Buyer Beware” because they are not judged. However, many nice fleeces are entered in this class and the BSG would like to continue to offer this marketing opportunity for producers. The committee chair, to maintain the standard of the show, will pull fleeces with wool rot or other extensive problems. Class 00: For Sale Only Fleeces – sale will begin on Friday at 10am.
- Promotional materials may be inserted in fleeces only after judging.
- The wool sale will not accept mailed fleeces. An agent may enter and retrieve fleeces with a letter from the grower.
- Please note new classes in Mohair Show.
- BSG Wool Show Committee Chair reserves the right to pull fleeces from the Wool Show and Sale upon the recommendation of the judge in order to maintain the recognized high standards of quality, handspinning fleeces. Fleeces with wool rot, abnormal ‘vegetation’ or other disqualifying issues will be pulled with a note provided as to the cause. Please see the chairperson at
the registration table with fleeces that are questionable.
- 2011 Judging—Judge’s overall impression of each fleece will be recorded on a card for the grower.
