Black Sheep Gathering — 2008
Sheep-to-Shawl

Friday, June 20, 2008
9am - 2pm

We are located in Expo Hall building One, near the vendors at the Spinner’s Circle spot, under the “Sheep-to-Shawl” banner. The event will be held from 9am-2pm. You may unload your loom and equipment through the back (east) door of the building, which opens at 8am and then re-park your vehicle. Only team members will be allowed in the contest area.
Charlie and Melda Montgomery will make announcements, demonstrate and explain the competition to the public. The team areas will be marked. You will also receive a wristband that will allow you to have snacks and beverages in the building during the contest.
The judging will be at 2pm sharp. Ribbons will be awarded directly afterwards. We would like very much to have the shawls on display in the Fiber Arts Competition when they are completed. You are invited to the annual potluck dinner that begins around 5:30pm Saturday. Additionally, if you’re available after the potluck, plan to model your shawl at the Spinner’s Lead event held in the animal show ring, at 8pm.

RULES

Process: Woven shawl.
Size: At least 1440 square inches. (This is equal to approximately 20" x72", minus any fringe.) It can be larger. Warp is to be spun by members of the team or its group or guild beforehand.
Fiber: At the Black Sheep Gathering, the fiber must be at least 25 percent colored wool. It may be dyed. The remainder of the shawl should be wool, with the exception of approximately 10 percent other fiber, either mixed into the warp or weft, or as decoration, if the team desires. Any or all of this may be dyed.
Yarns: For the sake of demonstration, yarns are to be plied. This also aids in the look and feel of a “fresh” shawl (one that has not yet been washed).
Team Six members: one weaver, five spinners.
Equipment: Loom—warped and tied-on only. You may use only four harnesses or less. Tie-up is at the discretion of the weaver. Spinning wheels, related equipment, drum carders may be used for carding the weft yarns (only one drum carder allowed per team). Teams may also use hand cards or wool combs, if desired.

Please supply Melda with samples of the fibers going into the shawl so she can describe the process to onlookers. Good luck and have fun!
